Is Telephone Prospecting Still the Best Way to Build Your Business?

The old-school way to start a home business is to get a list of leads and start calling them to present your business. Is that really the way you want to spend your time? Is spending hours of your time every day calling strangers, listening to busy signals, disconnects, trying to get a hold of people who are screening their calls really something you enjoy?

That technique was very effective before the turn of the century especially before everyone had caller ID. It still does work and you will gain some important skills from telephone prospecting but it's more work than most people are willing to do. I do recommend that you spend some time getting good at telephone prospecting because the skills you will learn will be priceless in your business and personal life. But there are better ways of recruiting.

One of the problems with telephone prospecting is it's linear. You can only do one call at a time and there are only so many calls you can make in a day. Like doing manual labor your time is not being leveraged. You will spend a lot of time and energy trying to get a hold of and then talking to people most of whom will not be qualified or have the desire to join your business to begin with.

Another problem with the old ways of prospecting is it puts you in the position of chasing your prospects. When someone feels chased their natural instinct is to run.

Instead of chasing your prospects imagine if you could put yourself in a position where they are seeking and chasing you. Then you can pick and chose who you want to do business with. This is easier to do than you might think and it's the way professional network marketers and sales people are making fortunes in todays competitive marketplace.
